Communes founders of the geopark

The “Hateg Country” territory is comprised of the town of Ha t eg and 78 villages that are grouped into ten village-municipalities : Baru, Densus, General Berthelot, Pui, Rachitova, RÂu de Mori, Sarmizegetusa, Salasu de Sus, SÂntamarie Orlea, Totesti.

The town of HATEG is the only town of the region and together with the villages of Nãlati, Vadu, Silvasu de Sus, Silvasu de Jos has a population of 12.549 inhabitants.


The ten village municipalities are:

BARU is situated in the south-eastern part of the region, along the upper valley of the Strei river It has 3.093 inhabitants, formed from the union of seven villages: Baru, Livadia, Petros, Prunduri, Valea Muncelului, Brotoni and Valea Lupului.

DENSUS, with 1.936 inhabitants, is situated in the west of the region, 12km west from Hateg; it is composed of Densus, Pesteana, Pestenita, Hatagel, Stei, Poieni and Criva .

GENERAL BERTHELOT , with 962 inhabitant is situated 5km east from Ha teg and comprises the villages: General Berthelot, Fãrcãdin, Livezi and Tustea.

PUI is located in the south-east of the region following the river Strei and its tributary. It had a nearly urban status in the past and now has a population of with 4.675 inhabitants dissipated in small villages: Pui, Bãiesti, Rusor, Galati , Fizesti, Federi, Ohaba Ponor, Ponor, RÂu Bãrbat, Uric, Hobita and S erel.

RACHITOVA , with 1.492 inhabitants is situated in the north-west of the region and is made up of the villages of Rãchitova, Ciula Mare , Ciula Micã, Vãlioara, Mesteacãn and Boita.

RÂU DE MORI , with 3.658 inhabitants, is the largest village municipality of Romania . It is made up of the following villages: RÂu de Mori, Suseni, Brazi, Clopotiva, Ostrov, Ostrovul Mic, Ostrovel, Unciuc, Valea DÂljii, Sibisel and Ohaba Sibisel .

SARMIZEGETUSA , with 1.461 inhabitants lies in the most western part of Ha t eg Country and includes: Sarmizegetusa, Hobita-Grãdiste, Breazova, Pãucinesti and Zeicani.

SALASU DE JOS has a population of 2.785 inhabitants and is located in the central southern part of the region. It consists of the following villages: Salasu de Sus, Nucsoara, Sãlasu de Jos, Ohaba de sub Piatrã, Pestera, Paros , RÂu Alb, Coroiesti, RÂu Mic, RÂu Alb

SÂNTAMARIE ORLEA , with 3.625 inhabitants covers an important part of the center and north-east of the region. It includes: SÂntãmãria Orlea, Bãrãstii Hategului, Sãcel, SÂnpetru, Ciopeia, Balomir, Bucium Orlea , and Subcetate.

TOTESTI , with 1.897 inhabitants represents the central part of the region. It is composed from Totesti, Reea, Pãclisa and CÂrnesti.
